You Don't Need a College Degree to Start Your Own Networking Group - Some Tips to Get Started

My business networking "career" all got started on a warm May evening in 2007 at the Alumni Center of my Alma mater Northeastern University.  I was at the tail end of my career at Staples and heard that the best way to look for a new gig was to network at business events and then connect to new people via this social media platform called Linkedin.   Pretty revolutionary way to look for work, back then, which ironically is the norm today in 2017.

So I started going to these business networking events at NU on a regular basis and was also introduced to other groups and attending events all around Boston over time.   I marveled on how positive, energetic and successful the professionals were at least compared to the corporate America environment of negativity and gossip.  Eventually, I built quite a network of over 4000 professionals on Linkedin.

I live in what you call the spacious suburbs west of Boston.   Back in 2012, I was also working in the suburbs and would attend evening events in Boston and consistently meet new professionals on a weekly basis.

As you all know, the traffic and parking in Boston is pretty intense.

So I started to look around the Metrowest of Boston for events and besides your typical BNI and Chamber event, the choice of evening networking events was pretty slim.   I was thinking, hmm, how about if I start my own networking group and base it in the Metrowest with the intention of expanding into other areas of Massachusetts?   I will not have to venture into the city and it would give me a chance to meet like minded professionals close to home.   I came up with a simple and direct name for the group.

Enter Mass Professional Networking!

So I booked my first venue in Framingham, MA at the popular Uno's Bar & Grill on Rte. 9 in the midst of Shoppers World and the Natick Mall.  My first event was on Martin Luther King's Day and it was a rare 65 degrees in the middle of January.    I networked to my existing connections as well as various social media channels to attract attendees.    We ended up having 140 attendees and I made some connections that day that I am still in touch with today.
First Mass Professional Networking Event on 1/16/2013

My group continued to have events in the Metrowest, Worcester and even Foxboro a couple of times however, the number of attendees at our events started to dwindle a little.  The economy was getting better in Greater Boston and for suburbanites, it is tough to balance family obligations and work, so business events were not at the top of people's list for evening activities.    So, I started doing events in downtown Boston and over time, my networking group regained its mojo.     Today, Mass Professional Networking has over a thousand members through various social media channels.

Keep in mind, I started this group with no event planning experience and I was an introverted IT Professional.   By networking with professionals, I came out of my shell and become an extroverted marketing professional while keeping my day job in IT.   My point is that if I can start a networking group, anyone with the ambition can do the same.

I like to provide you some tips for starting your own networking group in no particular order.    Business Networking is the defacto way to build a lead generation machine for your business, career or even hobby, so here we go.

1)  Attend other business events and take note how the hosts manage the event, including everything from the sign-up process to how the room is set up.   You can find events on Meetup.com or Eventbrite.com in your local area.

2) Come up with a name of your business networking group before holding your first event and be consistent and don't keep changing the name over time.    Once you have a consistent name, it will be easier to build membership organically.

3) Learn how to network, including your elevator pitch, how to engage and interact as well as follow up with attendees.

4) Start connecting with venues in your area.   Restaurants and pubs are good especially on Monday-Wednesday nights, since you are bringing people into their venue.   Mobile workplaces are also great since they are built for networking and engagement.   It is great to have five or six venues to rotate your events.

5)  Hold free events for the first year of your networking group so you build a big mail list.   After a year, start charging for your events ($5- $20 is a good range).   You want to charge attendees to help determine who are the serious networkers or who is there for the free appetizers.

6) Speaking of food.  It is always a good practice to offer free appetizers.   It not only keeps the drinkers in check, but also is a good place for people to congregate and meet each other.

7) Speaking of alcohol, work with the venue and your hosts to assure that nobody goes a little overboard and does something embarrassing.   Kindly call a cab or an Uber for that person so they go home safely.

8)  Learn how to use tools such as social media, Eventbrite.com and Meetup.com to help promote your events and build your names list.   We are so lucky today where you can simply promote an event on Twitter, Linkedin or Facebook and attract 100 attendees to your event.   Beats picking up your phone!

9)  Once your group is two years old or older, start holding events with a mix of networking and speaking engagements.   This will attract new clientele and your group will become known in your area and some people will be approaching you to have events at their venue!

10)  Finally, have fun and meet new professionals and help them do the same.

I personally love what I do and have met some amazing people along the way.   The future of Mass Professional Networking is bright and great things are coming!

Your Health is a Marathon Not a Sprint - Inspiration from The Boston Marathon

Today, was the 121th running of the most famous marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon.   It is 26.2 miles of hilly terrain through scenic towns and cities from bucolic Hopkinton to the bustling Back Bay section of Boston.

Today's run was especially challenging due to the warm sunny conditions.  The last I heard around 2400 runners got treated for heat exhaustion.    The mantra was #BostonStrong and #oneBoston to help our determined athletes to get through the challenges of the marathon course.   Boston has become closer than ever, especially after the awful events four years ago at the finish line, and it was so amazing seeing everyone come together to cheer the runners on.   Why I love this city so much!

Marathon runners train for Boston, for years and years.  You cannot wake up one day and  decide you are going to run the Boston Marathon.   It starts with the physical aspect of running in all conditions and changing your diet along the way.   Most of all, it is perseverance and positive mindset that determine when you are ready to run 26.2 through the wilds of Metro Boston.   Marathon runners know that it is a marathon that takes years of training and not a sprint.

Like the Boston Marathon, Your Health is like a Marathon, not a Sprint.

My company AIMC Health Solutions focuses on four sectors of health & wellness - Fitness - Supplementation - Diet - Positive Mindset.    In every sector of your health, you need to treat it like a marathon, not a sprint.   I have some great examples below.

Fitness - You know the people that whenever you talk to them, they are like, I am going to start hitting the gym hard next week, and go to the gym on Monday and are at the bar by Friday?   Exercising consistently three or four times a week is essential for great health, positive mindset and the proper digestion of food.   Waiting till tomorrow to exercise is like waiting for those lucky numbers on a lottery ticket.

Supplementation - There is a reason why the label on the vitamin bottle says "Daily Vitamin".   It is because you need to take your vitamins every day!   Our food is not nutritious anymore, therefore why supplements are essential for great health.    Taking vitamins is like a marathon, where you stay healthy for the long haul and not for short periods.

Diet - There are no quick fixes or magic pills to make you lose weight, despite what some companies promise you.    Eating healthy consistently is the long haul.   You do not want to experience a yo-yo diet because that is when you may have health problems.  Eating natural foods light on sugar, dairy and grains is essential for a healthy long life.  There are great resources out there that will teach you how to eat a diet for a marathoner and not a sprinter!

Positive Mindset - Eliminating negative influences over the long haul is probably the most difficult of all.   There are always those people that discourage you from doing anything that would help you.   It is unfortunate, but over time, it is best thing to do to assure great health.    Marathoners hang out with marathoners.   Successful people hang out with successful people.    It is that simple.

In closing, watching the marathon today provided me more inspiration to help others with their health and wellness.    After watching the marathoners push through the vigorous course through the warm temperatures, it made me realize that you can do anything as long as you treat it like a marathon and not a sprint.  It is all about how you finished the race.

Networking Tips Going Into 2017

It is hard to believe that I have been hard core networking for almost ten years now.   From my infancy days going to the Northeastern University Alumni Networking Events to now running my own business networking group called Mass Professional Networking,  the landscape has changed.   Back in 2008 and into 2009, the economy was at its worst and networking events were the place to be seen and heard.    Almost all of the events were packed mostly with professionals looking for their next job or trying to start a new business venture.   From Foxboro to Providence to Framingham to Boston, every event had well over 100 hungry professionals trying to meet as many people as possible.   I fell into the same routine, and aggressively build a large network myself.

Fast forward to the past year, I noticed the networking events have become smaller, but the quality of people and relationships are much better.    It is probably because the economy is much more stable and growing now.    There are not many unemployed attendees but instead professionals with great business ideas, expansion and growth.  It is actually a shame some stopped networking when their situation got better.    I always thought when things get better, professionals should network more than ever.

So we are now about to enter the year 2017.   The networking events are smaller, more focused and the attendees are more seasoned.    Here are some of my recommended tips to survive networking in 2017:

- Stop the sales pitch now.   When you are at an event, look to make friends.  Would you go to a bar and start pitching your product or service?   Probably not.

- Know why you are attending a networking event.   Who would you like to meet?  What questions you would ask to understand if someone you meet is worth following up with?   What is your thirty second non-salesy elevator pitch?  Having structure going into an event makes it worthwhile.

- Only ask someone for a business card if there a possibility of following up with that person.   I am guilty of being a business card collector.  I have three full shoe boxes of cards to prove it.   Chances are, I have a card from every company in Massachusetts.

- Go to as many events as your schedule allows. As I mentioned earlier, even when the going is good, you should continue to go to events.   You never know when your scenario will change.  You lose your job or your business no longer exists.

- Stop thinking social media is for kids.   I still meet people that think Facebook or Twitter are for children and they wouldn't be caught dead using social media.  Social media is here and now and the #1 way to meet the right people.   The best way to use social media is for follow-up with professionals you have met at an event.

- Your goal is to become a people magnet.   I am going to end this blog with this tip.   When you are popular and a great resource, people gravitate to you.   Be a nice person and make everyone you meet to be about them and not yourself.

Happy Networking in 2017!
