AIMC Health Tip - Why the Human Connection is the Best Health & Wellness Advice

If someone asked me what the best thing you could do for your health is, they'd probably expect me to say eat better, exercise more, get eight hours of sleep, or drink more water.

Those things absolutely matter.

But the older I get, the more I believe the greatest health advice isn't found in a gym, a pharmacy, or a supplement bottle.

It's found in other people.

I've met successful executives, entrepreneurs, athletes, and retirees. I've watched people go through incredible highs and heartbreaking lows. One thing has become crystal clear: the people who seem happiest and healthiest are rarely the ones with the perfect diet. They're the ones surrounded by meaningful relationships.

Think about the last time you had a great conversation with a friend. Or laughed so hard your stomach hurt. Or received an unexpected phone call from someone simply checking in to see how you were doing.

You probably walked away feeling lighter.

That's not just your imagination. Your body actually responds to human connection. Stress levels drop. Blood pressure improves. Your immune system gets a boost. Your brain becomes healthier. Even your heart benefits.

On the flip side, loneliness can quietly take a tremendous toll on our health. We live in a world where we're connected to thousands of people online, yet many of us have never felt more disconnected in real life.

That's why I've come to believe networking isn't just good for your career. Community isn't just good for your social life. They're good for your health.

Every networking event, every coffee meeting, every phone call with an old friend, every dinner with family is doing more than filling your calendar. It's filling something we all need as human beings: connection.

Maybe that's why I enjoy bringing people together so much. Whether it's through AMA Boston, Mass Professional Networking, AIMC Business Solutions, or simply introducing two people who can help each other, I've seen firsthand what happens when people genuinely connect. Opportunities are created. Friendships are formed. Stress melts away. People realize they're not alone.

So here's my challenge this week.

Instead of only tracking your calories or counting your steps, count your conversations.

Call someone you haven't spoken to in a while.

Invite someone to lunch.

Put your phone down during dinner.

Ask someone how they're really doing—and take the time to listen.

Because at the end of the day, the healthiest investment you can make isn't in another fitness gadget or wellness app.

It's in another human being.

Your body, your mind, and your heart will thank you for it.

AIMC Health Tip - What To Do With a Couple of Dumbbells?

With just a pair of dumbbells, you can effectively train your entire body through a variety of exercises. You can perform exercises for your biceps (like curls), triceps (like extensions), shoulders (like lateral raises), back (like rows), chest (like presses), and legs (like squats and lunges). Compound exercises like dumbbell squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses can work multiple muscle groups simultaneously.

Here's a more detailed breakdown: Arms: Biceps: Bicep curls (standing or seated), hammer curls, concentration curls. Triceps: Triceps extensions (overhead or lying), triceps kickbacks, close-grip bench press. Shoulders: Front Deltoids: Front raises. Lateral Deltoids: Lateral raises. Rear Deltoids: Rear delt flies (bent-over or seated). Overall Shoulder Strength: Arnold press, overhead press. Back: Upper Back: Bent-over rows, kneeling one-arm rows. Lower Back: Deadlifts. Chest: Chest Muscles: Dumbbell bench press, dumbbell flyes. Chest and Shoulders: Push-ups with dumbbell support (like renegade rows). Legs: Quadriceps: Squats (goblet squats, front squats), lunges (forward, reverse, or Bulgarian split squats), step-ups. Hamstrings: Romanian deadlifts (RDLs), good mornings. Calves: Calf raises (standing or seated). Glutes: Hip thrusts. Core: Abdominal Muscles: Russian twists, weighted sit-ups (on an incline bench). Core Stability: Renegade rows (plank with dumbbell row). Trunk Rotation: Dumbbell trunk rotations. Tips for Effective Dumbbell Workouts: - Progressive Overload: Gradually increase the weight, reps, or sets as you get stronger to continue challenging your muscles. - Proper Form: Focus on maintaining good form throughout each exercise to prevent injuries. - Variety: Incorporate a variety of exercises to target different muscle groups and avoid plateaus. - Listen to Your Body: Don't push yourself too hard, especially when starting. Take rest days when needed. - Consider a Bench: If you have a bench, you can expand your exercise options with exercises like bench presses, dumbbell flyes, and seated dumbbell exercises. - Use an App: Consider using a fitness app to help structure your workouts and track your progress. Let's go over some exercises you can do with a couple of dumbbells for a complete body workout. The Importance of Water and Movement In The Winter

We are officially in the Winter Solstice today so the days will actually start getting longer from today onward. With the colder months, we tend to hibernate more and think we don't need to drink more water since the perception is that if you sweat like in the summer, you need to replenish with water.

The fact is even when you're not sweating, you lose water through the skin, and the drier air from indoor heating can cause you to become dehydrated without even noticing. A lack of water not only results in dehydration but can increase your risk of kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and constipation. In the case of movement, working out in cold weather can help improve your cardiovascular health, boost your immune system, and increase calorie burn. It also helps combat winter blues and keeps you fit and active during the colder months. Sounds good? So, move it and drink it, water that is. Fitness Tip - When Is The Best Time To Workout?

When Is The Best Time To Workout?

This is one of the most common questions we get. We prefer mornings for many reasons, but the real answer is "It Depends" Working out in the morning — especially on an empty stomach — is the best way to burn stored fat, making it ideal for weight loss. That’s largely because the body’s hormonal composition in the morning is set up to support that goal. Also, early workouts often lead to fewer distractions and increased productivity throughout the day. An afternoon workout can also be a great way to avoid an end-of-the-day slump. The Journal of Physiology study found that exercising between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. can shift forward your body clock in the same way as an early morning workout. When it comes to exercising in the evenings, the most significant benefit is that most people have more time. This can lead to better focus, longer workouts and better exercise adherence if you’re working out with friends or participating in an exercise class. The drawback about evening workouts is if you have trouble with your sleep patterns.

Do when is the best time to workout? Well, it depends. I prefer mornings but of course it depends on your sleep schedule and health goals. Check out our video on the DeSocial Connector You Tube Channel -

You Need FAT Loss, Not Necessary Weight Loss - My Three Tips To Get You Started

Going to the gym personally for the past 30 years and being the health/wellness business for the past 10 years, I’ve seen it all in terms of diet fads, workout fads and any other fitness fad you can imagine. This includes pretty much every weight loss hack known to man. This can make losing fat for the long term quite challenging for many, so I would like to help and provide my personal top 3 fat loss tips from my lengthy time in the industry.

1. Strength Training

Out of all the fads, trends and hacks that’s changed over the decades, the number one thing that has never changed is the Human Physiology, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.  I have always taught my clients two rules. Rule Number 1: Muscle Dictates Metabolism. Increasing lean muscle mass results in higher energy production & output thus increases caloric burn throughout the day. The more lean muscle developed, the more fat percentage will be lost. Strength training is an exercise where the muscle contracts against a resistance for an extended period of time. The most common being weight training. If you don’t have access to weights or a gym you can easily get started by using your own body weight, or get yourself a pair of resistance bands.   Heck I have even used my wife to do squats once in the while!

2. Increase Your Cardio

Now if all you’re doing is cardio, you don’t need to necessarily increase it. Doing cardio alone or too much cardio can actually slow down your fat loss efforts. Muscle is metabolically active which means they require calories just to be able to maintain their size, shape, density, and ability to grow. By doing too much cardio you start dipping into your muscle’s supply, decreasing your muscle mass over time & slowing down your fat loss efforts. Instead, incorporate a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) routine into your exercise program. HIIT incorporates quick bursts of energy with small breaks in between so your heart rate remains at an elevated level. The great thing about HIIT is that you can incorporate resistance training and cardio at the same time. This can dramatically increase your fat loss efforts in a shorter period of time.

 3. Adopt a Healthy Dietary Lifestyle

I’ve seen both men and women working out in the gym five days per week and their body composition never changed. Have you ever seen this? Or perhaps, could this be you? Rule Number 2: Abs Are Made In The Kitchen. Exercise and healthy eating habits go hand in hand, it’s a package deal, especially if you want to increase your fat loss efforts. I don’t believe in diets as it is known today. I believe in lifestyle and the healthiest lifestyle I’ve come across in all my decades in the fitness industry is one which I have been living on long before I knew it was a thing. It’s Low Glycemic Impact Eating. The glycemic index measures foods from 0 to 100 based on how fast it raises your blood sugar level. Things like cutting down on refined carbs, filling up with more fiber, eating more healthy fats, drinking healthier beverages, eating more vegetables & eating lean meats are just a few things that makes up a Low GI Lifestyle.

 **BONUS**

In addition to the above tips, a bonus tip or two is to get your sleep, at least 6-8 hours a night and get rid of the stress and or the factors that gravitate you toward a bad lifestyle.

There are plenty of options available including our amazing effective TLS Weight Loss Program to help you lose fat and improve your health, but take it from a professional gym rat, following my three fat loss tips will not only support your goals but will also put you on the road to an overall healthier lifestyle!  You have to start somewhere and you have to start NOW!

10 Recommendations to Change Your Life in 2020 from the DeSocial Connector

We are now in a new decade after one that was definitely defining in the world of information technology, marketing, health/wellness and entrepreneurship.

In the world of IT, it is cloud, Internet-of-Things and cybersecurity.
In marketing, it is social analytics and the death of traditional marketing.
In health/wellness, it is all about what we put in our bodies and how much we move.
In the world of entrepreneurs, it is all about the side hustle and why you need it today to survive financially.

The world is different and it you are not willing to adjust to the rapid change, you will be left in the dust!    With the experience I built over the past decade in IT, Marketing, Health/Wellness and Entrepreneurship, I like to provide 10 recommendations for you to get off to an amazing start this decade.

(1)  Focus on being proactive when it comes to great health.
I wanted to start with this one since, without great health, you will not be here reading this blog.   We are in a society of a quick fix, you know take a pill, or drink a shake or fake exercising.   You need to focus on your lifestyle and implement a fitness, supplementation, diet and mindset program now to get yourself off to a great start!

(2)  Get out there and network professionally.
You are never going to get ahead in the professional world, unless you connect with other professionals face-to-face and build lasting relationships.   If you are looking for a job, this is the only way to go.  Sitting behind a computer gets you nowhere.

(3)  Take social media seriously.
I heard it a lot out there, you know I don't do Facebook, Tik Tok or Instagram.   Social Media is the second coming of the First Amendment and it is out of control, but it is the best way to learn, connect and influence others.  There is a place and platform for everyone, just spend your time wisely on it.

(4)  This is not your parent's IT running our companies today.
Information Technology is no longer about building systems and on-call support.  Today's IT is about adaptability, the endless cloud and security.   It is also about getting out of your shell, or away from coding behind a couple of monitors, and partnering with your business to be a service provider.

(5) There is no more Corporate America.
Back in the day, the typical professional stayed at their company for 5, 10 even 20 years, and did the same job, while building a 401k and hoping for 65 to come soon.  This is not the case today.   Now we are in the world of constantly selling ourselves, building our personal brand and hoping we can stay consistently working.  We need to always be on edge that we may not have a job tomorrow.

(6) Side-hustles are cool.
I am in Information Technology, but love Marketing and Health/Wellness.  I build my side-hustle around my passion for Social Media and being healthy.    The great thing about side hustles are that it gives you hope for the future and you will notice that you are more positive about life.

(7)  Diets are not the answer.
The classic New Year's resolution is going on a diet especially after indulging over the holidays.   Generally diets don't work.  You cannot expect to drink a shake and/or skip meals and expect to be healthy.    Eat the right foods often, drink water and exercise, and you will see results.

(8) If you have a small biz, take digital marketing seriously.
Marketing is the #1 way for your future customers to know about your company.  So many times, business owners delay and don't focus on their website and that is ok.   I recommend getting a company to do it for you and build a great marketing campaign to show your customers how serious you are about your business.

(9)   Constantly education yourself.
I am going to be honest, watching American Idol does nothing for you.   Instead of sitting in front of a TV drinking coke, get out there in the evening and go to a meetup or a presentation on something that you are passionate about.   You will be networking, learning and may find something that you can focus on!

(10)  Get a mentor.
If you want to get healthy, find a healthy person to mentor you.
If you want to start a business, find a successful business owner to mentor you.
If  you want to switch careers, find someone that switched their career.
The first place to start is to find an influencer to get you started.!

I hope my recommendations can help you.  It is all about taking advantage of the life we have and to help others, so let's rock it in 2020 and be successful together!

Why the Fitness Club is Better Than the Nightclub

It is hard to believe I turned the big 5-0 last month considering how I do not feel old at all and have a zest for life and am excited for what is ahead.   I am involved with a lot of side hustles and run professional networking events in the Boston area and the majority of the attendees are younger and serious about their career and life which is enlightening.  Hanging with so many successful young professionals has had an amazing positive effect on me that I feel like I have just turned 30 instead!

I remember back when I was in my 20s, it was all about partying till 4am at the various nightclubs in Boston, Providence and even the occasional trip to a warm climate.   My colleagues had the day job, then went out till 4am, got up at noon and may hit the gym to sweat out the hangover.   Fitness was important but not the center of life then.  It was all about how hungover you can get.

As I got older, the nightclubs started to close and more fitness clubs were opening.   I remembered a time when Rte. 9 in Framingham was a strip of nightclubs whereas today it is dotted with fitness clubs.   The fitness club was becoming the new nightclub where people congregate, shared workouts and diets and even met their significant other.   I was pretty amazed when I went to the gym on a Friday evening recently and it was packed.  Back in 1995, you went to the gym on a Friday night, you were a loser.

Today, people are healthier than ever.   With yoga, SoulCycle, Crossfit and your basic free weights, it is cool to be into fitness, and not cool to smoke cigarettes.    That is why of all of my business ventures, my health/wellness business is my baby.

So why is the Fitness Club Better Than the Nightclub?

1)  Being active in a Fitness Program is an Investment in Your Health whereas investing in a cocktail at a Nightclub will only result in a headache and oversleeping the next day.   You feel amazing after a workout and are ready to tackle the day.   After a big night out, the only thing you are tackling is your pillow.

2)  People are positive and happy at the gym.  You notice that people encourage you at the gym and smile (well except for those that overdid it with some of  those supplements).   There is no drama at the gym, it is all business.   At a nightclub, it is all about drama.   Well look at her or why is the bartender so slow.   Why are there so many brawls and bad stories at the end of a night out?   Don't see that at a fitness club.

3) Successful people tend to congregate at the gym.    I met a lot of entrepreneurs and forward thinkers at the gym, even on a Friday night.   Refer to #2, nightclubs tend to congregate people that have no direction in life.   It is all about who you  hang with, right?

So hopefully, you will join the fitness revolution and get strong, feel great and look great!   I am rooting for you and want you to think 50 is the new 30 and 60 is the new 40.   It is the best de-aging process there is, so let's rock, at the fitness club.

It is Holiday Time - Some Tips to Beat Stress and Stay Healthy and Feel Awesome

It is the most merriest time of the year.

A time for spiked egg nog
Online Shopping
Sitting in Traffic
Scraping ice off your windshield
Dusting off the snow shovel
and office holiday potlucks.

Whew!  That is a lot, no wonder people are stressed this time of year!

It is no secret that stress is the leading cause and a lot of times the root cause of health issues in the world.

When it comes to diet and food/beverage of choice, it seems the more stressed you are, the more you reach for the most sugary snack or drink.

Bad diets are one of the leading causes, next to lack of exercise and good sleep, for most of our health issues today.   People get sick and are very reactive toward addressing health issues resorting to pharma products to solve all of their issues.   But that is a topic for another day.

So, how do you beat stress?    Some tips are fairly obvious, but some are somewhat of a surprise.  If you do them all together, you may find out stress is a thing of the past and you don't want to live in the past.

So here we go!

(1)  Exercise three or four times a week, preferably in the morning.

Talk a walk at lunch, go to the gym in the morning and set precedent for a great day.  Personally, I notice myself to be less stressed fighting epic Boston traffic in the morning on the days I work out.   There is no excuse for not exercising.  Make the time!

(2)  Eat the Right Foods and Not in Excess

The Europeans got it right.  There are no such thing as buffets there and their meals are mostly made fresh and in small portions.  The less sugar and dairy, the better.   Bread products make you depressed due to bad carbs.   Eat dark vegetables and lean meat and you will notice your digestion to be better and you will feel more energized for the day.

(3)  If you are tired,  Sleep.   Get your Beauty Rest!

After all, you are a pretty good looking person, so in order to be less stressed, if you are tired, then sleep sufficiently.  Around 7-8 hours a night is ideal.  If you have trouble sleeping, check your diet and don't eat anything one to two hours before you call it a night.

(4)  You have a Brain.   Nurture It!

Just like physical exercise, your brain needs exercise constantly by learning new things.   Read an inspirational book, or a topic that makes you happy and positive.   The most successful people in the world are always learning.   Listen to Tom Brady, the five-time Super Bowl winner, when he is talking to the media.  He mentions that he is always learning.     When you are occupied and learning, you don't have time for drama and stress.

(5) Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is the Present

You can only control the present, so don't stress about what happened yesterday.  It is not going to change things.   Live, think and experience your life now in the present and focus on things you can control.   A classic case is if your sports team lost a game.   What control did you have over your favorite team besides screaming at the top of your lungs at your TV?  Get over it and move on.

If you put all of this tips together you will notice yourself to be less stressed and will enjoy the holiday season and any season for its best.     Stress is the root cause and it is always important to solve the root cause of any issue, especially if it has to do with your health.

Your 9-to-5 Corporate Job is Killing You. Really. Some Helpful Tips to Stay Healthy.

It was yet another epic commute into downtown Boston this morning crawling at the top speed of 20 miles per hour on the Mass Pike, when lucky.  It made me think how awful commuting is, not only for our mental health but also for the environment, for our productivity and our wallet.   So why do we still commute in the age of personal computers and VPN, I wonder?

We are in the world of the 9-to-5 and it is not going to shake soon.   We are entrenched with being stressed in the morning, sitting it traffic and then plopping ourselves into a desk chair for eight hours then getting even more stressed with the afternoon commute home hoping that you see your family before they hit the sack.  Yes, there is flex time, and working from home, however, judging by traffic patterns, they have not made a dent changing reality.

It is not that you probably hate your job and we are not bashing the 9-to-5 job.  After all, you may be doing some interesting work, making some interesting phone calls or working on that cutting edge project.

However sitting at your desk is killing you.    You have muscles for a reason.  They need to be worked to stay fresh.   But we sit, sit and sit again.   In our office, at the endless meetings and your body is stressed out from not moving.  You are in front of computer screen or a phone and your eyes start getting blurry from the glare of the screens.

Then lunchtime rolls around and what do you do?  You take the elevator to the cafeteria and order that salad with blue cheese dressing and some onion rings and proceed to go back to your desk and eat your lunch in front of your computer screen getting stressed out over the latest string of emails.   Not exactly the mission to health & wellness.

By the end of the afternoon, you would have to be pried from your chair so you can get into your car and take on that afternoon rush hour at the breakneck speed of 15 miles per hour out of the city.

Between the stress of our commute, the lack of movement at your desk sitting in front of a glaring computer screen, worrying about deadlines and our bad lunch diets, we are killing ourselves as if we are better off smoking a pack of cigarettes dangling from a crane high above the city below.

Again, I am not recommending quitting your corporate job.  After all the bills need to be paid.   I would however recommend planning your exit from the traditional 9-to-5, but that is a story for another blog.

So here are some suggestions to tackle the health habits of the Corporate 9-to-5 day in timely order -

-  Before you leave for work - Start off your day with Exercise -  The best time to go to the gym is in the morning, bottom line.   It sets the tone for the day, it de-stresses you and you end up feeling awesome.   If you cannot make it to the gym, do some exercises at your house.   I have a great video on what to do with a couple of dumbbells that can help.

- OK it is commute time - Don't look at the traffic report.  It stressed you out.   Instead either queue up some upbeat music or listen to an inspirational audio in your car.   It would allow the time to past by and the next thing you know, you are pulling into the office garage.   If you have a hands free phone in your car, catch up with some people that make you happy.

- Now you are at the office and that office chair is calling your name.  If you are on calls, stand up in your office and periodically move your muscles.  Try to sit as little as possible.    Do some stretches every once in a while to keep your body alive.    Snack on something healthy like raisins or trail mix instead of a sugary snack.

- Of you are off to a meeting five floors above you.  You guessed it, I am going to suggest taking the stairs whenever possible.  Stair climbing is amazing exercise.  If you are having a 1-on-1 meeting or a small group, I suggest a walking meeting.   I like to do my 1-on-1 meetings taking a walk outside to a nearby park.  Walking and exercise in general, kicks the creative thinking in gear and you would be amazed how much you can accomplish versus if you just sat in your office.

- OK it is lunch time.   Step AWAY from your office and go out.  Get fresh air and a light lunch low on sodium and sugars and high on protein and Vitamin B & D.   Lean meat, dark vegetables and a nutritious juice is ideal.    Everyone is busy, but believe me you will get more accomplish away from your desk at lunch versus sitting there stressing over emails.

- The afternoon is nap time.  Yes, you heard me.   Take a quick five minute nap if you can and then have a healthy tea or snack and repeat your morning activities of periodically standing up when taking calls and stretching in your office to keep your body moving.    Before you know it, your work day is over and you will feel as great as you did at the beginning of the day.

- Now you are ready for that commute home and the traffic is just as bad as the morning only in all directions.   Put on that relaxing Jack Johnson song or listen to an inspiring JR Ridinger or Tony Robbins talk and take your mind on all those red lights in front of you, and before you know it,  you are home in the arms of your family.
