AIMC Health Tip - What To Do With Some Resistance Bands To Stay In Shape

Resistance Bands are a great tool for working out on the go or you don't have access to a gym for a free weight workout. With any exercise program, check with your physician and also understand how to use resistance bands. The key is control and form.


You can use resistance bands for a full-body workout by performing exercises like squats, bicep curls, rows, and chest presses, or you can use them for targeted training and warm-ups. Resistance bands can be used to add resistance to bodyweight exercises, assist with movements like pull-ups, and help with rehabilitation. Strength training:
  • Bicep Curl: Stand on the band, hold the ends with palms facing forward, and bend your elbows to curl your hands up.
  • Squats: Stand on the band, hold the ends, and perform a squat, pushing back up to a standing position. You can also add a shoulder press as you stand up.
  • Bent-Over Row: Stand with your feet on the band, hinge at your hips, and pull the band towards your chest, squeezing your shoulder blades together.
  • Chest Press: Wrap the band around your back, hold the ends, and push your arms out in front of you.
  • Overhead Press: Stand with one foot on the band, hold the handles, and press the band up over your head.
  • Clamshells: Lie on your side with the band looped around your thighs, and lift your top knee, keeping your feet together.
Assistance and accessory work: = Pull-ups: Secure the band to a pull-up bar and place your foot or knee in the loop to get assistance as you perform pull-ups.
  • Warm-ups: Use bands for exercises like band pull-aparts to warm up and build shoulder stability before lifting weights.
  • Rehabilitation: Resistance bands are great for rehabilitation after an injury because you can control the resistance and range of motion.
How to adjust resistance To increase resistance: Use a band with a higher resistance level, shorten the length of the band, or adjust your stance to make the exercise more difficult. AIMC Health Tip - Building Your Strength Training Routine to Get Results -

Strength Training is one of the best ways to assure optimal health leading into your older years. It prevents injury and helps slowing the aging process. As an active strength trainer myself, I have noticed results and simply do not feel any older.



Overall, working out four days a week can lead to significant improvements in both physical and mental health, provided the workouts are well-structured and balanced with adequate rest and nutrition.
Before starting your workout, it is great to stretch and do some light cardio to warm your muscles - about 10 minutes
Here is a routine I follow each week:
- Day 1 - Legs, Calves and Biceps
- Day 2 - Chest, Triceps and Abs
- Day 3 - Cardio - Planks & Jumping jacks
- Day 4 - Back, Biceps and Calves
- Day 5 - Shoulders, Triceps and Abs
The king of all exercises for each is as follows:
- Legs - Squats or Leg Press
- Chest - Barbell and Dumbbell Presses
- Back - Deadlifts or Barbell/ Dumbbells Rows
- Shoulders - Shoulder Press - Barbell or Dumbbells
The key is to do one of the above exercises on a regular basis.
For your cool down, go for a walk and do some stretches.

What is Better for You? Protein or Carbohydrates?

You have heard of certain diets that suggest ramping up the protein and reduce the carbs. From a carbs perspective, it is always how are you getting those carbs.
So, what is the difference between protein and carbohydrates?



Carbs provide quick energy, like a fast fuel, while proteins are like versatile building blocks that support our muscles and overall body structure. The key is to balance how much of these nutrients we eat.
The body uses proteins, carbohydrates and fats in different ways. If all three nutrients are abundant in the diet, carbohydrates and fats are used mainly for energy while proteins help make hormones, muscle and other proteins. Proteins in food are broken down into pieces called amino acids.
So, in a nutshell, you need both. Get your carbs from starchy vegetables and foods and make sure you don't overdue your protein intake at one sitting. You probably know the sugary carbs are bad for you!

Why Strength Training is Essential For Older Adults?

Current research has demonstrated that strength-training exercises have the ability to combat weakness and frailty and their debilitating consequences. Done regularly (e.g., 2 to 3 days per week), these exercises build muscle strength and muscle mass and preserve bone density, independence, and vitality with age.



People with stronger muscles are less likely to fall and, when they do take a tumble, less likely to sustain a serious injury. Loss of muscle strength and mass aren't the only factors that contribute to age-related declines in function and mobility.
