Celebrity Marketing vs. Influencer Marketing - What is better?

Celebrity marketing and influencer marketing are both strategies used by brands to promote their products or services through endorsements, but they differ in several key aspects:

Celebrity Marketing:

  1. Definition: Involves using well-known public figures, such as actors, musicians, athletes, or other celebrities, to endorse products or services.
  2. Reach: Celebrities typically have a broad, mainstream audience that spans various demographics.
  3. Perception: Celebrities are often seen as aspirational figures, and their endorsements can lend a high level of prestige and credibility to a brand.
  4. Cost: Hiring celebrities for endorsements is usually very expensive due to their high demand and established fame.
  5. Engagement: Celebrity endorsements can sometimes lack a personal touch and may not engage with the audience on a more intimate level.
  6. Examples: Nike using Michael Jordan, Pepsi using Beyoncé, or George Clooney for Nespresso.

Influencer Marketing:

  1. Definition: Involves using individuals who have gained a significant following on social media platforms, blogs, or other digital channels to promote products or services.
  2. Reach: Influencers can have niche audiences that are highly engaged and specific to certain interests or demographics.
  3. Perception: Influencers are often perceived as relatable and trustworthy, as they tend to engage more directly and personally with their followers.
  4. Cost: Generally more cost-effective than celebrity marketing, though top-tier influencers can still command high fees.
  5. Engagement: Influencers often have higher engagement rates due to their more interactive and personal connection with their audience.
  6. Examples: A beauty blogger promoting skincare products, a fitness influencer showcasing workout gear, or a food vlogger reviewing kitchen gadgets.

Key Differences:

  1. Audience Size and Scope: Celebrities usually have a larger and more diverse audience, while influencers often have smaller but more targeted and engaged followers.
  2. Cost: Celebrity endorsements are typically more expensive than influencer endorsements.
  3. Engagement and Authenticity: Influencers often engage more directly and authentically with their audience, whereas celebrity endorsements can sometimes feel more detached.
  4. Content Creation: Influencers are content creators by nature and often produce organic, relatable content, whereas celebrities might participate in more polished, high-production campaigns.

Both strategies can be highly effective depending on the brand’s goals, target audience, and budget. Some brands even combine both approaches to maximize their reach and impact.

My Experience with Pharma Medications - and Why Going Natural is the Way for Me

I am very lucky that at nearly 50 years of age that I have not had any real health issues.   It could be a testament to my dedication to working out regularly, taking effective supplements and generally eating the right foods.   I am proud of the fact that for over 27 years consistently I have not missed a week or month from working out except one time when I had to have a gum graft and had to stay low key when it came to exercise.

As mentioned, I have worked out consistently for many years, and remained injury free despite how hard core I work out at the gym.  Finally this summer, I noticed some inflammation in my right wrist and it was a little painful and affected my workouts, especially my bench press and barbell curls exercises.  At first, I thought it was carpal tunnel syndrome, so I got myself a wrist wrap and wore it when using my computer.   The inflammation and pain never really went away after a few weeks so I decided to make an appointment with my PCP to have my wrist checked out.

My doctor is pretty laid back and when I have mentioned in the past how I like the natural way to take care of myself,  you can tell his mind was on other ideas to solve people's health issues.

So my doctor checked out my wrist and before he said "It is not Carpal Tunnel" he prescribed me some NaProxen to take care of the inflammation.   I asked if I should try out some Fish Oils and he said nah that stuff is not that effective.    So, I went with it for now.

The local pharmacy didn't even have any record of me since I have never really taken any medications.   The pharmacist went over the medication with me and how often to take it, and then proceed to mumble all of the side effects for the next three minutes.   She went so fast, I asked her to repeat mentioning the side effects a couple of times.   I was like, yikes....

So I started taking the Naproxen and it started to work after about three days.  My wrist was feeling a little better but it was still not 100%.   What I did notice was a bubbly itchy rash forming on all of my fingers on my left hand.   I thought to myself, I have not been near any poison ivy or anything in months, so what could it be?   A rash started to form on my arm too, so I thought, that's it, stop taking the Naproxen and then see how  this can be treated.  I bought some Cortizone cream, but that did not seem to work so guess what, time to see a doctor again.

It was late on a Friday, so I decided to go to one of those CVS One-Minute Clinics.  They were fast and efficient.  The nurse practitioner took a look at my rash and said it was definitely eczema and that some Predisone would do the trick.    So I went back to the same pharmacy and now they recognized me and didn't even ask for my picture ID.   Again, they went over how to take the medication and mumbled all of the side effects including suppressing my immune system.  Gee, that is not good.

So I took the Predisone for a few days and the rash quickly went away until one night, I noticed that my throat was closing up.   I took some Benadryl and proceeded into a nice deep sleep.  That was the end of taking Predisone, for sure.   My wrist was feeling better, but I was starting to think that time healed the wound versus these meds.

This is not the end of the story though.
I started to notice my eyes swelling up and you got it, pink eye forming.  Great, I was going on a trip in a week, and I had blotches on my eyes.   I thought, I would have to be Bono on my trip and always wear my shades!   My eyes got worse,  and it was a Saturday, so I decided to go to an urgent care facility in my city.  The nurse practitioner was nice and did my vitals and said I had a bad eye infection in both of my eyes.  It was probably due to my weaken immune system that I was not able to fight off the bacteria that formed in my eyes.   She proceeded to give me some eye drops.

I took the eye drops for a few days and at least the pink in my eyes went away, but then these huge styes formed under my eyes and I noticed every time I used the drops, my eyes would sting like crazy.   I was like WTF, what do I do now.   The redness under my eyes was very noticeable to a point that I cancelled appointments and events for the week and we are days away from my trip to Iceland.

This time I made an appointment with my PCP.  This the third time in 4 months I have seen him.  Before 2017, I have not see a doctor for 6 years and never had a health issue.

I mentioned to him that I think I am allergic to just about every medication so how can I get rid of these styes in my eyes and quickly?   He chuckled and recommended a cream for eye styes and an antibiotic for me to take in case the cream doesn't work.

I started using the cream but still have the styes.  They are getting better and hopefully by the time I hit Reykjavik, I can take some pictures and be in them!

So I think for now, I am going to stick to Omega-3 Fish Oils and some great Isotonix vitamins to maintain my health since pharma medications just causes a ripple effect of spending and new issues.   What if I was taking Fish Oils all along?  Would I have had the wrist inflammation to begin with?  Probably not.  Case Closed, it is known the body is natural and the way you should heal your body should be natural too.

Now to the local drug recycling center to get rid of these meds and all those damn side effects.

What I Learned About Sales from the Window Guy

Springtime in New England means it is time to plan and execute on some household projects and like every year as a homeowner I have my list.

On top of that list, I wanted to replace a few windows in our family room since it was time and we have been on an energy saving kick.   We finally scored a contractor that will be doing our job next week but it was pretty painful getting there.

The first vendor was introduced to me at a local home show.   It is a reputable company with high quality windows.  The sales person came to my house and was a nice guy and he knew exactly what I wanted,  vinyl sliders with double pane glass to keep the weather at bay.   He did not question me and went ahead and measured my window frames and gave me a rough estimate of cost.   As you should always do, I asked for a written estimate to be sent to my email and the guy said "No Problem, you will get that in a day or so".   A few days went by, then a week, so I called the company using the number the guy gave me and they said that I need to call the guy on his cell phone directly to get a status on my quote, so I did.  I left a message and asked for a response.    I did not receive a response or follow-up to my call and email, so I called the company again to check the status of my quote.  Again, they apologize and said that I need to contact the guy that came to my house for the quote.  At this time, I was like F*** this, I am going with another company.

Lesson #1 - In sales or in any customer focused business, especially a home improvement business, follow-up is essential.  In the world of social media and with so much competition, if you don't follow-up with prospects, you will get a bad rap and people will know about it very quickly.

So I looked through the list of vendors from the Home Show I attended and found another reputable company from Rhode Island that specialized in Custom Built Windows.   I called them to make an appointment to get a quote on vinyl sliders with double pane and they had a tech free on the following Saturday.  Great, we are moving now!   Leading up to that Saturday appointment, I must have gotten 6 calls from different people asking me to confirm my appointment.   I repeatedly mentioned that it is all set and did you talk to the other person that called me?

Lesson #2 - Communicate with your sales team and make sure you are all on the same page.  Nothing is worst than an impression from your customer that your team is scattered and unorganized.

We are still on the same Custom Built Windows vendor from Rhode Island.  So Saturday is here and the guy came right on time for our appointment.  He was well dressed, as if he sold insurance on the side and came to the door with his official PowerPoint presentation and questionnaire.   It was a warm day for April so he can see that he was sweating either due to the weather or nerves.   So I mentioned to him that I had about 20-30 minutes and if he can proceed with getting the window measurements and then provide me a written quote.  He did the measurements and then asked if he can go over the quote with me right there and then.   I was like, cool, we are getting somewhere.   He then proceeded to go through a 40 page presentation on the history of windows and the differences between shutters, wood windows, double pane vs triple pane and why his company is the best company in the business.  The presentation went on for 90 minutes until I cut him short and said, can I have my f**** quote?   He ended up going through all of these numbers as if he was writing up a mortgage, and finally came up with a quote that was astronomically high for vinyl sliders.  I was thinking gee are we paying for his time running through that 90 minute presentation?   I was agitated and asked him to leave since my wife and I were already late for an appointment.   He then feverishly mentioned that "one day sale" if I bought today, he will slash the cost by 40%.   I did not care and asked him to leave.  This was a disaster.

Lesson #3- Where do I start?  First, listen to your customer.  Second, customize your response to what your customer is asking for.  Third, be conscious of your customer's time.  This was probably the same presentation for customers that wanted shutters, sliders or a new roof.   Listen to your customer!

This was not the end of Vendor #2.  For next few weeks, they kept calling me and not leaving messages and until one day I picked up the phone and said to not call me anymore.  They said sure, then guess what, a couple of days later, another person called me from the same company.   I will end this with, see Lesson #2.

Finally, I vented my frustration on a local blog and well-known contractor gave me a call and asked if he can help.   At this point, I was like sure.  A third time is a charm, right?   This guy was very personable and asked what I needed and that he will take care of it.  Long story short, my windows are getting replaced next Monday.

Lesson #4:  Your customers are human, not dollar signs.  Be personable and get to know them and build their trust.   You do that and you will take your business to the next level.

Sales is a tough business.  I understand that being in business myself, but it is art.   The art of listening, being personable and having a great supporting team.  Spend the time achieving those skills and you will be a success!
