Stop Telling People What You Do. Start Asking Better Questions.

The Networking Mistake That Costs People Opportunities Every Day

Picture this.

You walk into a networking event, shake someone's hand, and within five seconds they say:

"Hi, I'm John. I own an accounting firm. We provide tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll, CFO services, and..."

Sound familiar?

It happens at nearly every networking event.

Unfortunately, it also ends many conversations before they ever begin.

Why?

Because networking isn't about giving a commercial.

It's about starting a conversation.

The Problem With "I Do..."

When you immediately launch into what you do, you've made the conversation about yourself.

The other person hasn't had a chance to tell you who they are, what they need, or whether they're even someone you can help.

It's like trying to prescribe medicine before diagnosing the patient.

Instead of building rapport, you've started pitching.

Flip the Conversation

Instead of saying:

"I'm a financial advisor."

Try asking:

"Tell me about what you do."

Or...

"What brings you to today's event?"

Or...

"What kind of clients are you looking to meet?"

Now something powerful happens.

The other person starts talking.

And while they're talking, you're learning.

Questions Qualify Prospects

The best networkers aren't the best speakers.

They're the best listeners.

By asking questions, you quickly discover:

  • Can this person become a client?
  • Can they refer business?
  • Are they hiring?
  • Are they looking for opportunities?
  • Do they know someone you should meet?
  • Is there a way you can genuinely help them?

You can't know any of that if you're busy talking about yourself.

People Remember How You Made Them Feel

Think about the best conversations you've ever had.

Were they with someone who talked for ten minutes about themselves?

Or with someone who asked thoughtful questions and showed genuine interest?

People naturally enjoy talking about themselves, their businesses, and their goals.

When you become curious instead of promotional, you become memorable.

Earn the Right to Tell Your Story

Notice that I'm not saying you should never talk about what you do.

You absolutely should.

But after you've learned about the other person.

Once you've listened, you can tailor your response.

Instead of giving the same 60-second pitch to everyone, you can say:

"Based on what you just told me, I may be able to help. Here's what I do..."

Now your introduction is relevant.

It becomes a solution instead of a sales pitch.

Great Networking Isn't About Selling

It's about serving.

Ask questions.

Listen carefully.

Look for ways to help.

Make introductions.

Offer ideas.

Create value before asking for anything in return.

Ironically, that's when more business naturally follows.

A Better Networking Formula

The next time you're at a networking event, try this simple approach:

  1. Ask about them first.
  2. Listen more than you speak.
  3. Ask follow-up questions.
  4. Look for opportunities to help.
  5. Only then explain what you do—and relate it to their needs.

You'll have better conversations, build stronger relationships, and leave a much more lasting impression.

Final Thought

Networking isn't about being the most interesting person in the room.

It's about being the most interested.

The people who ask the best questions don't just collect business cards they build relationships.

And relationships are what ultimately lead to referrals, partnerships, clients, career opportunities, and lasting business success.

So at your next networking event, resist the urge to start with "I do..."

Start instead with one simple question:

"Tell me about yourself."

You may be surprised where the conversation and the opportunity takes you.

AIMC Marketing Tip - A Networking Event Isn't a Birthday Party, Wedding or Dinner. It Is for You!

Every networking organizer has received the same message:

"I'm so sorry...I can't make it tonight." My response is always the same: No apology necessary. Here's why. A networking event isn't a birthday party, a wedding, or a family dinner. You're not attending because the host needs you to show up. You're attending because you might benefit from being there. When you miss a networking event, the person who loses the most is usually...you. Maybe you would have: Met your next client. Connected with a future employer. Found a business partner. Learned an idea that changed your business. Made a friendship that lasted for years. None of those opportunities know your schedule. They simply go to the people who are in the room. As organizers, we love seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. We work hard to create a welcoming environment, but we don't measure our success by whether one specific person attends. We measure success by the connections that happen. So if you can't make an event, don't apologize. Just make a commitment to attend the next one. Because networking isn't about doing the organizer a favor. It's about investing in yourself. Remember this: The opportunities you miss are almost always the ones you never knew were waiting for you.

Mass Professional Networking Events and Happenings - May 2026 - Turn Your Pitch to a Question

Mass Professional Networking Events & Happenings May 2026 - The Networking Tip - Turning Your Pitch Into a Question -

Here is our YouTube Video on the AIMC Business Solutions Channel - Mass Professional Networking Events and Happenings - May 2026 - Turn Your Pitch to a Question

First, Jeff went over upcoming events in May 2026, which are found on: http://www.aimcbizsolutions.com/massp...
May 13th Little Rhody Professional Networking Event at The District in Providence - RSVP - http://mpnetworking051326.eventbrite.com

May 27th Mass Professional Networking Event at aLoft Seaport in Boston - http://mpnetworking052726.eventbrite.com
Now Onto our Networking Tip - Turn Your Pitch into a Question - Turning a pitch into a question—a technique often called a Question Pitch is a powerful way to engage your audience by making them reach their own conclusions, which often feel more persuasive than a direct statement. Instead of declaring a solution, you present the problem or potential benefit as a query that prompts the listener to agree with your premise. How to Reframe Your Pitch To turn your pitch into a question, focus on the core value or the "pain point" you address: • Identify your "Hook": Determine the single most important value you offer. • Use the Interrogative: Replace your statement of fact with a question, especially when the facts are clearly on your side. • Create Dramatic Tension: Use a question to introduce a dilemma, then use the rest of your pitch to provide the compelling answer. • Encourage Self-Discovery: Phrase the question so the listener's natural answer is "Yes!" or aligns with your goal. Why This Works • Active Engagement: Questions trigger the "thinking mind," forcing the audience to process your idea rather than just listen to it. • Reduced Resistance: Direct statements can sometimes trigger skepticism; questions invite the listener to become a participant in the solution. • Emotional Trigger: Well-crafted questions often tap into the listener's emotions or personal experiences, making the pitch more memorable. Practice Turning Your Pitch into a Question at a future Mass Professional Networking Event.

Now onto our topic - Why You Never Know Who You May Meet at a Networking Event Networking events have a funny way of surprising you.

You might walk into a room thinking you’ll meet a few new contacts… and walk out having met your next business partner, your next client, your next job opportunity or even your next friend. That’s the magic of events like Mass Professional Networking. At one of our last events, I met two huge Instagram influencers and a famous musician! Every person in the room has a story, a network, and opportunities you can’t see yet. The person grabbing coffee next to you might run a fast-growing startup. The person you share a laugh with could introduce you to your biggest client six months from now. And the quiet conversation in the corner might turn into a collaboration that changes your career. The truth is, networking isn’t about collecting business cards. It’s about creating moments. Conversations. Connections that grow over time. The opportunities you’re looking for are rarely announced from a stage—they’re usually standing three feet away from you with a name tag. So, the next time you walk into a Mass Professional Networking event, remember this: Your next opportunity might already be in the room. You just haven’t said hello yet.

AIMC Marketing Tip - Why a Digital Assessment Is Critical For Every Company

Technology is moving faster than ever—and so are customer expectations. A digital assessment helps organizations understand where they stand today, what’s holding them back, and where to invest for the future. It’s a strategic health check for your business in a digital-first world.

Top Reasons a Digital Assessment Matters ✅ Uncovers Gaps & Inefficiencies Legacy systems, manual processes, and siloed data slow down growth. An assessment highlights what’s outdated and where automation or modernization will improve performance. ✅ Enhances Customer Experience Customers expect fast, seamless, digital interactions. Understanding current capabilities helps you improve journeys across web, mobile, support, and beyond. ✅ Strengthens Security & Compliance Cyber risks evolve daily. A review of digital infrastructure, access controls, and data governance ensures the business is protected and compliant. ✅ Improves Data Quality & Intelligence A company’s data is only as valuable as its accuracy and accessibility. Assessments identify breakdowns in data flow and opportunities to enable advanced analytics or AI. ✅ Optimizes Technology Investments Instead of guessing where to spend budget, leaders get a roadmap prioritizing what delivers the highest ROI and competitive advantage. ✅ Future-Proofs Your Business Model Markets shift. Digital assessments help you adapt—aligning capabilities with emerging tech trends, automation, and evolving customer behaviors. ✅ Empowers People & Productivity With the right digital tools and workflows, employees spend more time creating value—not wrestling with outdated systems. The Bottom Line A digital assessment creates a clear picture of what your company looks like today—and a blueprint for what it needs to become. It’s not just an IT exercise; it’s a business growth strategy. If you like a FREE Digital/Internet Assessment for your company, contact us -

How Do you Stand Out as a Marketer?

Standing out in marketing is about being both distinctive and relevant cutting through noise while truly connecting with your audience.

Here are the key ways to do that: 🔥 1. Know Your Audience Better Than Anyone Go beyond demographics. Understand their pain points, motivations, language, and behavior. Use insights to tailor your messaging, visuals, offers, and tone to what they actually care about. 🎯 2. Have a Clear and Unique Value Proposition Communicate what makes you different and why that matters to your customer. Be specific. Instead of “great service,” say “24/7 real-time support from industry experts.” 💡 3. Tell a Story, Not Just a Pitch People remember stories, not sales copy. Use narrative to show transformation—how your product or service helps people get from point A to point B. ✨ 4. Be Visually & Tonally Memorable Strong branding = consistent voice, colors, fonts, and aesthetic. Whether it's bold design, witty copy, or a quirky mascot—own something uniquely yours. 📱 5. Create Content People Want to Share Be educational, entertaining, or emotionally resonant. Focus on short-form, visually engaging formats (e.g., Reels, TikTok, carousels, memes) that align with current trends. 🚀 6. Leverage Social Proof Testimonials, case studies, user-generated content, influencer partnerships—all build trust and differentiate you. 🤖 7. Use Smart Tech (But Stay Human) AI, automation, and personalization tools can help scale your efforts. But authenticity and human connection still win—don’t lose your voice in the process. 🧠 8. Be First, Fast, or Bold Be first to market. Be the fastest to solve a problem. Or be the boldest in how you say it. Jeffrey DeSocio Of AIMC Business Solutions Honored As Framingham’s Local Business Person of 2025

BOSTON, MA: March 26, 2025 -- Alignable, the largest online networking platform for small businesses, announces that Jeffrey DeSocio of AIMC Business Solutions has been elected as Framingham’s 2025 Business Person of the Year!

Alignable’s 2025 Local Business Person of the Year Contest reached unparalleled participation levels, logging a whopping 333,000+ votes, 77,000+ recommendations, and 4,750 winners across the U.S. and Canada.

The largest online networking platform for business owners, Alignable.com invited its 9 million+ members to shout-out local business leaders who’ve gone above and beyond guiding peers and supporting entire communities, amid challenging economic conditions.

The 2025 contest is Alignable's most popular competition in over six years, with participation surging 20% compared to 2024.

During the 2025 contest, held from January 14 to March 7, 4,750 business owners—spanning over 4,500 communities—were recognized as winners, including ties. These leaders were honored for their dedication to supporting their peers and communities amid a year of economic challenges.

“In our local business community, we look out for each other and refer businesses down the street or around the corner to help make everyone in town as successful as possible,” said DeSocio. “And the challenges we’ve all encountered have compelled many of us to offer counsel to peers fighting to keep their businesses afloat. While I’m thrilled to receive this award, it’s really a testament to our entire community.”

DeSocio received a special badge on his Alignable profile to acknowledge this achievement. In previous years, similar contests have helped winners expand their networks and generate new business opportunities.

In some cases, the most-engaged champions have doubled or tripled their revenue in the year following a contest triumph. And in 2025, even more winners are likely to reap major rewards using the company’s just-launched Alignable 360 technology, which uses AI to unlock the full potential of members' networks, turning them into even more powerful growth engines.

Driving Recognition, Relationships & Referrals

"This contest has supercharged small business relationships, fueling referrals, fresh opportunities, and a wave of mutual support," said Eric Groves, CEO & Co-Founder of Alignable. "Generating more than 77,000 recommendations and 333,000 votes, this friendly competition shows that when small business owners unite, they’re unstoppable. It’s gratifying to see how strong recognition and relationships can spark such powerful momentum."
